Flagler Woman's Club House

            HISTORY

The Flagler Woman’s Club was organized in 1946 as the Flagler Civic Club by a group of thirteen women for the purpose of Community service as well as for social meetings.

Their fist civic project was refurbishing the Flagler Beach Elementary School, which had been closed during World War II due to its deteriorating condition, in order that it could be used in some beneficial way.  This building then served as a school for the first four grades for some ten years.  That school, now called the Wickline Center, currently houses a Montessori school and several educational programs for adults.

The original FWC members were instrumental in getting a lifeguard and towers on the beach, distributing snakebite kits, putting up the Christmas tree in Veterans Park, and establishing the July 4th celebrations.  The Club has consistently sponsored the Miss Flagler County Pageant, once called the Miss Florida East Coast Beauty Contest.

Early Fwc business meetings were held in the Pier House, member’s homes, the hotel or, during good weather, under the pier.  In the early years, officers of the Club would go to a potential member’s home prior to deciding on her admittance to the Club.  The first Silver Tea was held in the Pier House with the fishermen walking through and sharing in the refreshments.  City leaders told Club members not to tell them how to run their official business, so they decided to stay out of politics.  The first Meet the Candidates Night was held in 1974 to provide a forum for City and County candidates.

In 1948, the Club joined District 6 of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs with 35 members from all of Flagler County.  In December, 1999, membership in the Federation ceased so the Club could concentrate more on local charities and projects.

When the members decided to build their own clubhouse, two lots were purchased from a member and fundraising was started for the Building Fund.  The building was started in 1958 with $4,000.  At completion, the property was appraised at $16,000.  Along with fundraising projects, businessmen in Flagler and surrounding counties made contributions; the $7,500 mortgage was paid in full in 1964.  The “etc. room” was added in 1966 and there have been numerous improvements over the years.

A library was begun in a corner of the building in 1962.  In 1965, the City of Flagler Beach built a new City Hall.  The Club requested a room to house the 4075 books accumulated.  It was originally called the Eloise Blausey Library in honor of the first librarian and Club member.  In 1973, the City hired a paid librarian and took control of the library.  By 1976, the space became inadequate and the library moved to its current location.

The Club operated a Thrift Shop in a building on 3rd Street from 1963-1981.  It has sponsored an annual Community Art Show for County Artists since 1965.  A paper and aluminum recycling program was begun in 1985 and was discontinued to make more room for parking.  For several years, members were active in beach and roadway clean-ups.  A Happy Birthday Calendar was published for the community from 1950-1989.  Current fund raising projects include a Chinese Auction, Holiday Bazaar, Rummage Sale, Chili Cook-Off, Fashion Show, Bunco, bridge and card parties, and special dinners.

In the beginning few scholarships were given.  The first was $10 to a school band member to attend a music clinic in Tampa.  In 1984, Dorothy Sheehan reorganized the scholarship program and the Club gave a $200 scholarship to a high school senior.  Now that the Club consists of approximately 140 members, it can afford to five several $1,000 academic scholarships to students of the arts, and a HOBY scholarship each year, in addition to participating in the Take Stock in Children program.

In addition to participating in service projects and athe giving of scholarships, the Club currently donates considerable funds to over 20 local charitable organizations each year.  Separate funds are maintained to enable the Club to assist community members in times of emergency or acute personal need.

Using plants that grow naturally in your area means you will spend less time watering, fertilizing and controlling pests and diseases which is healthier for people, pets and the environment and saves money, too!

Plus, native plants provide foor and shelter for wildlife, so nature lovers will enjoy more sightings. Poinsettias and passion flowers are native. You can eat the passion fruit!

When you turn up the heat in the winter, your electric company is probably burning fossil fuels.

Putting on a sweater or warm robe will keep uo warmer and help conserve natural resources.
